With its natural beauty and iconic landmarks, Central Park is a photogenic oasis not to miss in the Big Apple.

There are a few places in Central Park that I recommend visiting. Chart out a route to hit all the scenic landmarks and you’ll be sure to capture Instagram-worthy images!

Rockefeller Centre & the Top of the Rock

How can I make a travel guide of the most Instagrammable places in NYC, and not include the stunning skyline view you’ll have seen all over Instagram?

In the purpose of full disclosure, there are a two places to get amazing city skyline views: from the Empire State Building and from the Top of the Rock. I personally recommend visiting the latter. It’s $20 cheaper, and you get skyline views of the city that include the beautiful Empire State Building. That makes it an easy win as one of NYC’s best photo spots!

When visiting the Top of The Rock, make sure to get your tickets ahead of time. You can order them online at their website and pick a time slot. Make sure to get there on time, so you don’t lose your spot. Then, make your way to the top of the 3 observation decks on the 67th, 69th, and 70th floors for incredible panoramic views of the city.

🎟 Tickets: Buy your Top of the Rock Observation Deck tickets
📍Location: Rockefeller Center, 45 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10111
🚆 Subway: If you’re taking the subway, the 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr Station is the closest station

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | For a slightly less crowded experience, I recommend visiting early in the day. However, the true Top of the Rock magic shines at night. Arrive a little before sunset to catch the city in daylight, as the sun sets, and at night. NYC has some pretty epic sunsets, so you will be sure to get great photos!

Times Square

Filled with the bright lights of giant digital billboards, Broadway theatres and iconic restaurants, Times Square is an absolute must-see. Surrounded by energetic and buzzing crowds, there’s no beating the atmosphere.

Whilst it’s virtually impossible to take photos without other people in them, the chaos just adds to the Times Square vibe. This truly is the best place to visit for a quintessential New York City photo opportunity!

Stand in the middle of the bustling walkways and look up at the dazzling billboards. You can get a great Instagram photo with the displays and signs in the background, and with you in the foreground.

The best time to visit is at night, when Times Square really does shine. However, if you want to clearer shots of the area, visit during the daytime. I recommend avoiding the afternoon hours on weekends when the area is most crowded.

📍 Location: Theatre District, New York, NY
🚆 Subway: If you’re taking the subway, the 7th Avenue and 49th Street is the closest station.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | For photos with fewer people in the background, walk a block west to 8th Ave. There are also fun photo ops on the red bleacher stairs in Duffy Square.

Manhattanhenge at Tudor City Place

Twice a year, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the city’s grid streets. It creates a sunset framed by concrete and glass skyscrapers – possibly one of the most magical you’ve ever seen. Whilst the crowds can be intense, but the experience and the photos are undoubtedly worth it.

Although the sun only sets directly in the middle of the street just twice a year, you can still get a gorgeous photo outside of these dates. The wide streets framed with architecturally beautiful buildings makes for a gorgeous photo of a setting sun!

📍 Location: Tudor City Place, New York, NY 10017
🚆 Subway: The Grand Central-42 St subway station is your closest, but there are a number of bus stops that will take you closer to the bridge for the perfect shot.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | Get as far east of New York as you can for the best photo – the best cross-streets are at 14th, 34th, 42nd and 57th

One of the best photo spots in New York, Bryant Park is a gorgeous green space just behind New York Public Library. It’s surrounded by iconic skyscrapers, but is famous for its lush seasonal gardens, al fresco dining and fun activities.

It’s still touristy, but somehow Bryant Park manages to be an air of calm in an otherwise busy city. It’s a great place to sit and people watch, get a coffee, or enjoy the stunning backdrop of skyscrapers just outside the park.

If you’re in NYC in November, make sure to check out the wonderful Christmas market stands and the infamous ice rink!

The High Line

Once destined to be demolition, the High Line has a new lease of life as one of New York City’s most Instagrammable spots. This unique elevated park runs along a historic freight rail line above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side, and has absolutely stunning views.

The High Line features beautifully landscaped gardens, art installations, seating areas, and incredible views of the city and the Hudson River. It’s an absolute photographer’s paradise, with the old railroad tracks and steel beams intermixing with the lush greenery. Meanwhile, the art installations make for fun browsing as well as super colourful photo backdrops.

There are loads of great photo opportunities along the High Line, so it’s worth spending some time enjoying the area. Check out this guide to the High Line for inspiration on things to do, where to eat and places to go.

Some of the best New York photo spots on the High Line include:

  • The Diller-Von Furstenberg Sundeck: Relax on the quaint wooden chaise loungers and enjoy an elevated view of the Hudson River and New Jersey skyline.
  • The 16th Street Viewing Spur: Creates a perfect symmetry with the parallel rail tracks leading to One World Trade.
  • The Observation Deck: Incredible panoramic views of the city’s skyline, the Observation Deck is a wonderful addition to New York’s skyline and a great spot to enjoy the city’s beauty from up above.

Opening Times: Currently open from 7am-10pm daily, but check the latest opening times here
📍 Location: The High Line, New York, NY 10011
🚆 Subway: The nearest station to the High Line is 23 St.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | The High Line can get crowded during peak times so, for photos with fewer crowds, try visiting during off-peak hours. I recommend staying until late to catch some stunning sunset views and gorgeous golden hour shots

Grand Central Station

Arguably one of the most stunning train stations I’ve seen, it’s not hard to understand why Grand Central Station is one of the top ten most-visited tourist attractions in the world.

Built in the early 1900s, the station is home to some of Manhattan’s most distinctive architecture. In fact, the interior design of the station house have earned it several landmark designations, easily making it one of the most Instagrammable places in New York!

Some of the best spots for photos inside Grand Central Terminal include the grand staircase facing the main concourse, the walkways overlooking the concourse, and the celestial ceiling depicting the zodiac. For iconic shots, stand on the central marble staircases or balconies to capture the concourse fully.

The terminal is free to enter (no tickets needed), but you can also take a guided tour of Grand Central Terminal to see some of the hidden treasures and secret gems within the station.

📍 Location: Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10017
🚆 Subway: Grand Central Station is serviced by the 4, 5, 6, 7, and S subway lines.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | The celestial ceiling of Grand Central Station is well worth it’s own photoshoot. To get the full ceiling in frame, I recommend using a wide angle lens such as the Olympus 17mm f1.8.

🏡 Lower Manhattan & Greenwich Village Instagrammable Places in New York

Lower Manhattan and Greenwich Village unfold as ridiculously picturesque neighborhoods, inviting you to discover New York photo spots at every turn. From the historic charm of the Village to the modern marvels downtown, these Instagrammable places weave a visual narrative of the city’s diverse landscape.

Flatiron Building

This triangular 22-story, 285ft building has become such an iconic landmark of Lower Manhattan. So much so, the entire area is now referred to as the Flatiron District.

It’s one of the best Instagram spots in NYC because the entire area in front of the building is a paved pedestrian space called Flatiron Public Plaza. You can take as much time as you need to get the perfect photo!

📍 Location: 175 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10010
🚆 Subway: The 23 St station will find you directly opposite this beautiful spot.

🍽 RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION | Exploring NYC’s photo spots definitely works up an appetite. So, whilst you’re in the area, I recommend stopping by Eataly for some brilliant Italian food! It’s a really vibrant marketplace, filled with delicious Italian produce (including fresh pasta), restaurants and stores.

You could even opt to do a food, history and architecture tour of the area for stunning photos and a happy stomach.

The Friends building

If you’re a fan of the hit US-sitcom, Friends (which you totally should be – it’s hilarious), then this is a must-visit location for you!

It’s not where they actually filmed each episode, but instead is the outside of the building that they frequently showed on the show. It’s iconic, and makes for such a fun photo!

📍 Location: 90 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | The full facade of the building is fairly tall and there’s not a whole lot of space to shoot from far away, without having a lot of other tourists in your photo. To get the perfect photo, I recommend bringing a wide angle lens for street photography, such as the Olympus 17mm f1.8.

⭐️ TOP TIP | If you’re a super Friends fan, then why not check out the iconic Friends Experience whilst you’re in NYC? Indulge your inner enthusiast with two floors of interactive exhibits, and even get photos posed in Monica & Rachel’s stunning (rent-controlled) apartment!

101 7th Avenue Mall

The mall itself, and almost certainly everything inside it, is gorgeous. One of the best places to take pictures in NYC is inside the store, on the third floor, with a view looking down on the stunning white spiral staircase.

It’s also worth browsing and taking some cute photos with the stunning displays and luxurious armchairs. Let’s be honest: the whole store seems like it was made with Instagram in mind.

📍 Location: 101 7th Avenue, New York, NY 10011
🚆 Subway: The 18 St station will find you just two minutes up the road from this stunning mall!

📍 Location: 9 Crosby St, New York, NY 10013

📍 Location: 525 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10013
🚆 Subway: The W Houston St-Varick St station will bring you just two blocks East of this stunning bar.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | I recommend staying for sunset to catch some stunning city views.

L’Appartement Sézane

Possibly the most instagram-worthy clothing store I’ve ever seen, check out this Parisian flower-embellished shop front. Not only is it ridiculously gorgeous, but doesn’t it just scream “spring” to you?

📍 Location: 254 Elizabeth Street, New York, NY 10012
🚆 Subway: Your closest station will be E Houston St-2nd Ave.

Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park is an iconic public park in Greenwich Village known for its stunning arch, gorgeous fountains, and lively atmosphere. It has quite an eclectic, artsy vibe – especially on weekends when performers and artists converge on the park

The central fountain and arch are arguably the park’s most common Instagram spots, and it’s easy to see why – they’re gorgeous!

📍 Location: Washington Square, New York, NY 10012
🚆 Subway: You have a choice for stations – either the W 4 St-Wash Sq or 8 St-NYU stations will take you just a few blocks either side of the park.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | Midday is the ideal time to capture photos of the arch, as you have symmetrical light on both sides.

🗽 Downtown NYC Instagram Spots

Dive into the heart of downtown NYC, where the city’s vibrant spirit meets iconic landmarks, offering endless places to take pictures in NYC. Whether capturing the Financial District’s skyline or the bustling streets, every photo from downtown NYC tells a tale of the city that never sleeps.

Statue of Liberty

Naturally, this had to make the list.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic landmarks and one of the best places to take NYC pictures. The Lady of Liberty stands proudly on Liberty Island, offering spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline in the distance.

There are a few great Statue of Liberty photo spots – here are my recommendations:

Take the Staten Island Ferry (free)

As a commuter ferry, the journey on the Staten Island Ferry is totally free and you can see the statue as it was meant to be seen. I actually made this trip twice: once during the day, and again at sunset / night. It was stunning, and I have no regrets!

However, it won’t get you super close to the iconic Lady of Liberty. If you want photos with the status, or to see its full scale in real life, I recommend heading over to Ellis Island appreciating her beauty up close.

📍 Location: Staten Island Ferry, 4 Whitehall Street, New York, NY 10004
🚆 Subway: Either the Whitehall St-South Ferry or South Ferry stations will bring you almost directly outside of Whitehall Terminal to board the ferry.

Head to Ellis Island (paid)

Take a trip to Ellis Island to catch this stunning statue up close.

There are no wrong angles, but I recommend heading to the pedestrian pathways surrounding the statue. The pathway right at the base looking straight up at Lady Liberty is a really popular spot to appreciate the scale. Meanwhile, the pathways further away capture the full statue with the stunning skyline behind.

The Ellis Island Immigration Museum has a second floor balcony that’s perfect for photos with the Statue of Liberty in the foreground and the Manhattan skyline in the back. The hardwood floors and large windows of the registry room also make an ideal photo backdrop.

💵 TOP TIP | If you are planning to visit multiple paid attractions in New York City, why not buy a Go City pass instead? You can choose 2-10 attractions from a list of 90+ top NYC experiences – including almost all of the paid ones on this list – for a flat price!

The Statue of Liberty’s crown and torch have recently reopened, so it’s well worth getting a shot from there. You can also get great photos from the main observation deck in the pedestal, with full views of the harbour.

Opening Hours: Check the latest opening hours here – they vary by season!
📍 Location: Statue of Liberty, New York, NY 10004

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | To avoid the weekend crowds, visit on a weekday if possible. Time your visit for around sunset to catch glowing golden hour shots, and avoid the afternoons when harsh shadows can make photography difficult.

Wall Street

Home to the financial district of NYC, you’ll find world-famous landmarks and beautiful architecture.

Embrace your inner Wolf of Wall Street and enjoy sauntering around the incredible buildings. Grab a cup of coffee or a hotdog from a nearby street vendor, and you can pretend for a split moment that you’re off to meet Mike Specter.

Whilst you’re here, don’t miss the New York Stock Exchange, and make sure to walk down Broadway to see the infamous charging bull and fearless girl statues.

📍 Location: Wall Street, New York, NY
🚆 Subway: Both Wall St stations and the Broad St station will take you right here!

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | The statues of the charging bull and fearless girl get insanely busy during the day. If you want a good photo, try and head there early.

The Oculus

One of the most insane and architecturally-amazing shopping centres I’ve ever seen, the Oculus is a definite Instagram location in New York.

It’s designed to look like a winged dove but, standing inside, it feels more like the inside of a whale. Pretty cool, nonetheless.

Head up to the top floor and take a picture of the stunning skylight for your Insta feed!

📍 Location: The Oculus, Church Street, New York, NY 10006
🚆 Subway: The WTC Cortlandt, Cortlandt St and World Trade Center stations will all bring you just a stone’s throw away from the Oculus.

🌉 Brooklyn Photo Spots in NYC

Uncover the Brooklyn’s endless through your camera lens with the best photo spots in Brooklyn. From the iconic Brooklyn Bridge to the artsy streets of DUMBO, each snapshot tells a story of the borough’s unique character. Get ready to explore and snap your way through the undeniable allure of Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Bridge

Easily one of the best Brooklyn Instagram spots, the Brooklyn Bridge stands as an iconic piece of New York architecture, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan. The bridge provides a breathtaking backdrop, especially during sunrise or sunset, when the city lights up.

The grandeur of the bridge offer a timeless and picturesque setting, making it a favourite among photographers and Instagrammers alike.

One of the best places on Brooklyn Bridge photos is from the pedestrian walkway looking back at Manhattan. Be sure to take pictures from both sides of the bridge for different vantage points of the Downtown skyscrapers.

For close-ups of the Gothic tower details and steel cables, walk to the centre of the bridge.

You’ll get the best photos if you take the time to walk across it, but do be warned that it’s ridiculously crowded. To see the best Brooklyn Bridge photo spots without huge crowds, I recommend going as early in the morning as you can bear to wake up.

📍 Location: Brooklyn Bridge Promenade, New York, NY 10013
🚆 Subway: The Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall st will take you right to the entrance of the pedestrian footpath for the bridge.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIP | If your itinerary is too tight to do a full trip across, I recommend going part-way across, taking your photos, and then walking back. Accounting for pedestrian traffic, this will probably take you about 35 minutes.

Aim to visit at sunrise or sunset for beautiful golden light on the bridge and Manhattan skyline. The lighting is perfect during the “magic hour” right after sunrise or before sunset.

DUMBO

Quickly becoming one of Brooklyn’s hottest neighbourhoods, DUMBO stands for ‘Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass’. It remains one of the best photography spots in Brooklyn.

The (ridiculously cute) acronym refers to a whole area of Brooklyn, rather than just one specific place, so you’ll also find restaurants and bars that have it in their name.

There are a few streets where you can take stunning photos, but Washington St is a photographer’s dream and arguably one of the best instagram spots in NYC.

The cobblestone streets and the view of the Manhattan Bridge make DUMBO both incredibly charming and photogenic, whilst the neighborhood’s artistic vibe and trendy atmosphere really add to the Instagrammable allure.

From here, you can get the iconic photo of the Manhattan bridge framed by two streets of stunning Brooklyn architecture. If you get the angle just right, you can even capture the Empire State Building centred right beneath the bridge.

This really is one of the best Brooklyn photo spots!

📍 Location: DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY 11201
🚆 Subway: York St station will land you a 5 minute walk away from this gorgeous viewpoint.

🍸 BAR RECOMMENDATION | Whilst you’re in the area, why not head to the epic rooftop bar at 1 Hotel for a refreshing drink with a gorgeous view.

New York Transit Museum

  1. Wake up early to beat the crowd
With over 60m tourists visiting each year, NYC is one of the most touristy cities in the US. The best places for photos in NYC are almost always incredibly busy during the day. This can make it really challenging to take clean, aesthetic shots without having loads of other tourists in the background.
Although it might be painful to wake up early, getting to these spots in the morning will mean you have the most picture worthy places in NYC all to yourself!
  2. Plan your timing
Consider visiting popular locations during sunrise or sunset for optimal lighting and fewer crowds. This can significantly enhance the quality of your photos.
  3. Explore beyond the obvious
While famous landmarks are a must, don’t shy away from exploring hidden gems. Neighborhoods like DUMBO and Bushwick offer unique and visually appealing backgrounds for your Instagram feed.
